Flybarless Gyro Programming Software

Setting up the USB Adapter

The Gyro devices require a TTL (5V) interface with the PC.

Tarot and CopterX have adapters available which allow you to use a USB port on your Windows PC to communicate with the Gyro.
There are other interfaces and methods that you can use but this guide only gives an example of dealing with the Tarot adapter.

You should be able to use the same principals to connect using other adapters.

Driver Installation

To use your Tarot adapter, you should install the USB driver called ZYXUSBdriver.exe found in the driver folder of the Tarot software installation.

You should install this driver before plugging the USB adapter into your PC. You only need to install the driver once.

Once you have installed the driver you can plug in the USB adapter. Windows will detect the USB adapter and assign it a COM port.

  • When using the FBL software, it does not matter which COM port is assigned by Windows, you just need to know which one.
  • When using the Tarot software, it is important that the assigned COM port is either COM1, COM2, COM3 or COM4.
  • The following section describes how to tell which COM port has been assigned and how to change the port if necessary.

Detecting which port has been assigned.

    First unplug your USB adapter.

    Start your device manager.

    Win XP

To access Device Manager, use any of the following methods:
  • Click Start, click Run, and then type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotation marks).
  • Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager.
  • Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
  • Type the following command at a command prompt: start devmgmt.msc
  • Windows 7

There are also various ways to access device manager, but the easiest is
  • Click start, in the Search box type devmgmt.msc , press enter
  • You will see a window similar to the following

Expand the section Ports (COM & LPT), you will see the existing ports on your PC, similar to the following

Note the existing ports. Now plug in your adapter
When you plug the adapter, Windows may collapse the Ports (COM & LPT) section again.
If it does, expand it again and you will see the new port

In this case, windows has assigned the adapter to COM7.

If you are using the FBL software, select this port before connecting the software.

If you are using the Tarot software, you will need to reassign the port to a number of 4 or less.

Since in this example we already have COM1 and COM2 in use, we will need to reassign COM3 or COM4.

To do this, right click the entry in the device manager and select 'Properties' You will then see a window as follows

Click on the port settings tab and then click on advanced.

At the bottom of the advanced menu you can select another COM port.

Select the port you wish to use from the list. If it is marked as 'in use', you may still select that port. It is okay to do this if the port is not presently in the 'Ports (COM & LPT) section.

If the port is in use, you will get a warning, just press YES to accept the change.

Press OK to accept the new settings.

It pays at this point to disconnect the USB port and then plug it again.

You should be able to check that it is now the newly assigned port number.

You can now close the device manager window and run the FBL or Tarot software.
